The ultra mobile 7" Asus Eee PC has been a sensation since it's release and the second generation higher spec Eee PC 900 with a bigger 8.9inch screen, 1024x600 higher resolution, a larger 12GB or 20GB solid state hard drive and a better 1.3 megapixel web cam is set to eclipse it.

Future Revisions are rumoured to include a 10 inch screen, Intel's Atom CPU, hard drives, touch screens and there could even be optional Blu-tooth and WiMax modules. Read more speculation in the Eee PC News Watch below.

12gb or 20gb? In order to keep the cost of the Windows and LInux versions the same, Asus will be releasing the Linux Eee 900 with 20GB of solid state storage and, in order to compensate for the extra cost of the XP licence, the Windows Eee 900 with just 12gb.

Software: Open Office will again be included with the linux Eee and Microsoft Works is set to be included with the Windows version.

The Asus Eee PC 900 is scheduled to be available in the U.K. in June 2008, however play.com are stating it is due for release on the 11th May.

The initial cost was reported to be 399 Euro for the linux version, approximately £315, with the Windows version costing slightly more. It was a surprise when it was announced the Windows and Linux Eee 900s would be priced the same in the UK, so the news that Australian buyers will be able to bag the Windows XP version at a considerably better price is nothing short of amazing. How could this be? could Microsoft be subsidising the XP version?

Asus are rumoured to be planning to spin off the Eee brand of products including the Eee PC, the E Television (E-TV), the E Desktop (E-DT) and the E-Monitor. Asus are also planning to release a 10.1 inch Eee PC 1001 and an 11inch model later this year.

Asus has caused confusion amongst it's retail customers in Hong Kong by selling the Eee 900 with 4400mAh batteries and not the longer lasting 5800mAh battery featured in many product reviews.

Asus CEO Jerry Shen confirms the Eee PC will eventually have a 10 inch screen and feature Intel's Atom processor. He did not however confirm when the 10" version would be released but it is expected to drive the cost up further.

Official Asus press release announcing the Eee PC 900. The improved specifications confirmed include the larger higher resolution screen, the 1.3mp camera and the innovative FingerGlide touchpad. The dimentions will be 22.5cm(W) x 17.0cm(D) x 2cm~3.38cm(H) and the weight will remain just under 1kg at 0.99kg.

Two Partitions. Also revealed is that the solid state storage will be comprised of two partitions, 4GB built-in + 8GB PCIe (12GB Microsoft Windows OS version) and 4GB built-in +16GB PCIe (20GB Linux version).

In an interview with Laptop Magazine Asus CEO Jerry Shen reveals the Eee 900 will have 1GB of RAM, an 8.9-inch 1024 x 600-pixel resolution screen, a 1.3 Megapixel camera, 8, 12 or 20GB solid state drives and will be supplied with either Xandros Linux or Windows XP.

Future plans include Intel's recently announced Atom processor, five or more new colour options to be introduced in June, hard drive options and possibly WiMAX and HSDPA mobile broadband.

Supply Problems. Shen also reveals he thinks the supply problems caused by a "huge shortage of batteries" can be solved by May.
